Open Forum – 94U Bus Service

So the University of Gloucestershire has changed its bus service. Those of you who have been following updates will have noticed my two posts on the subject ‘Costs of the 94U’ and ‘94U Update’. Earlier today I attended an Open Forum organised by the student union to allow students to directly ask questions to a representative of the University. This took the form of a question and answer session...

Future of Newspapers: eReaders?

Future of Newspapers: eReaders?
It would be an understatement to say we are living in changing times, revolution has called and Rubert Murdoch blew the final whistle. Murdoch has said that there is a plan to release a News Corp e reader which will be in direct completion to Amazon’s Kindle. The Kindle e reader allows books, magazines and newspapers to be wirelessly downloaded directly to the device. Downloading of newspapers,...

94U Update

As of writing this blog post I have literally (or audibly) come off Gloucestershire Star Radio 107.5 after having spewed my opinion into a phone about why the University of Gloucestershire’s decision about the bus service is ludicrous, outrageous, abysmal, disappointing and shameful. The recording, along with other interviews and pieces of information to do with the bus service, will be released...

Costs of the 94U

It has been announced that the previously free University of Gloucestershire bus service will now cost 70p a journey. A group on Facebook has been set up protesting against this move, quite rightly so. 70 pence is hardly an expensive charge compared to the £2 charge on London buses. However, as we all know costs soon build up and this will be yet another outgoing. University fees are rising, the...

Website Update

A few of you have contacted me raising awareness of slow loading page issues and occasionally a complete failure for the website to load. I am pleased to announce that this issue has been fixed and many of you should notice increased performance levels coming from my little blog. If you would be so generous to allow me to geek out: Pages have now been cached which means you should notice a speed increase...

Liberty of the Press

Liberty of the Press
“The time, is to be hoped, is gone by, when any defence would be necessary of the ‘liberty of the press’ as one of the securities against corrupt or tyrannical government.” When John Stuart Mill wrote that in his essay On Liberty he was immediately contradicted by the introduction of the ‘Government Press Prosecutions 1858’. Mill stated at the time that he didn’t think he had been contradicted...

PR Students mingle with the Stars

Originally published April 2009 in The University of Gloucestershire outreach newsletter. National and local press turned up in their droves as co-writer and star of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Simon Pegg, received an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Gloucestershire. There is a lot more to university than just burying your head in books, the experiences that come with studying at...

Mr Loïc Le Meur? Oh dear

Mr Loïc Le Meur? Oh dear
An article concerning Public Relations by a Mr Loïc Le Meur has recently come to my attention. The charming title of his article is “PR Secrets? Bullshit” and can be found here. Mr Loïc Le Meur There are a worrying amount of users, particularly on Twitter, labelling themselves entrepreneurs. Unfortunately Mr Loïc Le Meur falls into this category with a difference, he is a serial entrepreneur....

Finding a Balance

Wrote this article in regards to a PR project involving pethouseclub.com. These were some of my thoughts surrounding ePR. In order to develop a social networking website it is necessary to follow modern website models. An increasingly blurry area of social networking is the balance between free and premium content. It is seen generally on the internet that any knowledge or produce should be distributed...

Introductions

Last Tuesday I was asked by my course leader at the University of Gloucestershire to show new students around the campus. The students had arrived to be interviewed for the PR course and it occurred to me that exactly this time last year I was having my interview for the very same course. Five we meant to have come but only four turned up. Unfortunately we had a heavy snow storm during the night and...
